The mobile Internet builds on a radical shift in the way we work, play, and communicate, extending traditional Internet and Web services to such wireless devices as cellular phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs). This book is about the mobile Internet, the technology that powers it, and how to write content and applications for this new environment. It is both a tutorial and a reference for two major audiences: content and application developers, who need clear, technical details to guide their work, and business strategists and service planners, who need to understand what drives the mobile Internet and where it is heading.
"This book is an example of a unique partnership of motivated, technical teammates and would-be competitors coming together to develop a real 'how to' book on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)....[The authors are all] actively working in the wireless and Internet industry, on the 'front line', helping to develop and deliver services to customers using a new wireless Internet standard....[They have produced] a WAP reference that will become 'required reading' for anyone planning to create applications, author content, deliver, or deploy services to wireless devices." Gregory G. Williams Chairman of the WAP Forum From the Foreword

A large section of the book is an exhaustive reference on WML and WMLScript language features. It also includes detailed descriptions of emerging WAP technologies such as Push Messaging, UAProf (the WAP implementation of the W3C's Composite Capability/Preference Profiles, an emerging W3C standard for delivering client capabilities through an Internet network) and Wireless Telephony applications.
As stated in the Preface, this book serves "both as a tutorial and as a reference for several audiences: Business strategists and service planners; content and application developers; (and) University students and researchers". It's wealth of detail successfully delivers something of significant value to all these audiences; however developers should also check out Professional WAP by Wrox Press and readers looking for an introductory book would do better to look elsewhere.
The Wireless Application Protocol is a good "nuts and bolts" analysis of WAP technologies and will be of value to anyone looking to dig deeper than simple WML development, such as the experienced WAP professional and software engineers working on infrastructure products. --Andy Wigley
We all share two attributes. First, we are all working to build WAP-based products and solutions. In this book, we share our real-world experience, including our successful techniques and our mistakes. This experience will help you write your content more quickly and more effectively.
Second, we are all active participants in the WAP Forum-and many of us are key leaders-so we have been intimately involved with writing the specifications. In this book, we share the gaps between the specifications and the real-world implementations, and we provide some insight into what features can you expect in future versions of the specifications. This "insider" perspective is unique to our book.
This book is both a tutorial and a useful reference. The appendices include WML and WMLScript references, as well as pointers to SDKs and other sources of information. The book also includes a comprehensive glossary of mobile, wireless, and WAP abbreviations. The companion Web site to this book includes all of the code samples from the text, some additional WAP applications, and downloadable toolkits and phone simulators.
I hope that you enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed writing it. I look forward to receiving your comments, feedback, and suggestions.
Thanks, -sandeep
