As the population of the developed world gets proportionally older, elderly patients will continue to present more and more frequently to hospital for surgery and anaesthesia. Elderly patients pose a clinical challenge to the anaesthetist, who must take into account their special physiological, pharmacological and psychological requirements. This book offers a concise introduction to the basic science and major clinical issues facing the anaesthetist when dealing with the elderly patient.
This pocket book is the only practical guide on the management of elderly patients available for the clinical anaesthetist and senior trainee.

In our opinion, this book succeeds in accomplishing 2 goals: it provides a solid starting point and serves as an excellent guide for trainees/young anesthetists, and it simultaneously supplements the knowledge of the most expert colleagues. The topic is particularly suited to a pocket-sized, synthetic, and easy-to-read book like this. In fact, since anesthesia in the elderly is not a subspecialty and every anesthesiologist will increasingly face aged patients, the most experienced colleagues will likely appreciate this useful and practical guide in their daily practice.
