Review:
For those whose orthopaedic shelves are well-weighted, there will be probably still a gap for this most valuable source of all those conditions which are not to be found in orthopaedic texts, but which present in predominant numbers to every orthopaedic clinic...here is a book shorn of obscure phrases, giving clear descriptions of every condition causing pain in limbs, the physical signs required to make the diagnosis and a sceptical analysis of each as an entry...essential reading for everyone in surgical orthopaedics. (Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Vol 89-B)

[The book] is a comprehensive and extremely practical guide and a valuable companion to any health professional working in rheumatology...[I] would highly recommend this pocket guide to both trainees and qualified practitioners with an interest in the speciality. (British Health Professionals in Rheumatology)
About the Author:
Dr Hakim qualified in Medicine at the University of Cambridge and trained in General Medicine and Rheumatology at Addenbrooke's, Cambridge and University College Hospital, London. He was an Arthritis Research Campaign Clinical Fellow at St Thomas' Hospital before taking up his present post as Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust in 2000. Dr Hakim has held several clinical management posts leading up to appointment as the Trusts Director of Strategy. He is also a Principle and Chief Investigator for the UK in several international clinical trials in Rheumatology, works closely with the British Society for Rheumatology and Arthritis Rheumatism Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA), and is a Medical Advisor to the several Medical Charities. Gavin Clunie is a Consultant Rheumatologist at Ipswich Hospital. He trained in rheumatology in London and has a research background in musculoskeletal imaging and nuclear medicine techniques. He now has research and clinical interest in Spondylarthropathy conditions (ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis etc) and runs a bone density (DXA) scanning and mini-metabolic bone service in the hospital. Prior to medicine, Gavin was employed in tennis and had modest success as a professional and had taught widely in the USA and Australia notably. Further titles by this author can therefore be found in the 'self-help' sections of large book shops. After completing his specialist training, Dr Haq joined BSMS in 2005 as Senior Lecturer in Medical Education and Rheumatology at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, a new medical school established in 2002. Dr Haq contributed to curriculum development and assessment strategy, and in 2008 became Director of Undergraduate Studies, with responsibility for the undergraduate BMBS degree programme. Dr Haq has just been appointed as the first Associate Medical Director: Education for Arthritis Research UK and in the past has served on several BSR committees and was national trainee representative.
