I have always regarded the original first edition of this book by Richard Goody as being the definitive reference text on atmospheric radiative transfer. This new edition provides a welcome update to the original 1964 text which, after 33 years, benefits from the inclusion of more recent developments both in the remote-sensing field and in measurements of atmospheric constituents ... this new edition is much more than just a cosmetic updating of the old edition. The structure of the book has been modified to include new topics and many of the figures are new. This makes its purchase clearly justifiable not only for those who do not have the original edition, but also for those who do. For anyone with more than a superficial interest in atmospheric radiation, this book is mandatory reading, to gain an insight into the physical processes involved. (R.W. Synopsis:
Earth, like the other inner planets, receives virtually all of its energy from space in the form of solar electromagnetic radiation. The Earth's total heat content does not vary significantly with time, indicating a close overall balance between absorbed solar radiation and the diffuse stream of low-temperature, thermal radiation emitted by the planet. This study is concerned with the interaction between solar electromagnetic energy and planetary atmospheres, the subsequent redistribution of this energy, and its ultimate return to space in the form of low-temperature terrestrial radiation.
