This is a rigorous introduction to soil chemistry for non-specialist undergraduates and graduate researchers. The author describes soil minerals and organic matter in soils and the soil solution, and provides in-depth coverage of important chemical processes - these include solubility reactions, oxidation-reduction phenomena, adsorption, and ion exchange. The three final chapters present detailed applications to soil-plant relationships, fertilizer reactions in soils, acidity, salinity, mineral weathering, and soil management. Over 200 problems of varying difficulty are co-ordinated with the text, and an appendix of SI units summarizes their use in soil chemistry.

Review:
"Inclusion of this text in one's personal library is a must because of the wealth of useful reference material and well-developed examples of soil chemical phenomena."-Soil Science
"A very useful resource for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in environmental science, hydrology, agriculture, and related."-CHOICE
"The book can be recommended for everyone with an interest in soil science . . . . It will enable students to rapidly become familiar with modern methods of treating problems in soil science. The style and presentation of the book are exemplary." -International Chemistry
"This well written book can be highly recommended to all students and scientists who are interested in soil science, hydrology and environmental research" -Journal of Agronomy and Crop Science
"The Chemistry of Soils is a well written and concise treatise on soil chemistry, clearly targeted at the intermediate student of this discipline. However, it contains insightful discussion of a number of topics of interest to all students of surficial geochemical processes and is a useful addition
to all students, academics and professionals working in those areas." -Geochemica et Cosmochimica Acta
