Synopsis

This presentation and discussion of epidemiological data on stroke encourages readers to appraise critically, in conjunction with their clinical knowledge, the evidence relating to the causes, diagnosis and treatment of this common condition. The frequency of the misdiagnosis and the likelihood of the repetition of strokes make this particularly desirable. Epidemiology has three fundamental aims: to assess the likely success or failure of specific treatments by a close analysis of statistical clinical data; to use similar methods to improve the accuracy of prognosis for recovery, something which all concerned with the patient are anxious to know; and to provide information to increase the ability of medical professionals to limit the impact of diseases and conditions. The importance of practitioners being familiar with the principles of this medico-demographic science is thus manifest, and the concern the author felt about the lack of understanding of epidemiological principles among otherwise competent medical students was one of the reasons for his writing this book. Thus, although the book is concerned primarily with stroke, it makes more general epidemiological points which should be of relevance in other fields.
