9780156621656: Moscow 2042

In 1982 -- not coincidentally, just two years before the year made famous by Orwell -- Vitaly Kartsev, an exiled Soviet writer, discovers that a German travel agency is booking flights to a variety of tempting locations and, thanks to guaranteed passage through a time warp, to a variety of tantalizing years in the future. Moscow? 2042? Who could resist? And so begins Vladimir Voinovich's satiric -- and, as current events would cast it, prophetic -- tale of life in the USSr in the not-so-distant future. Kartsev's trip home turns out to be a series of outrageous escapades involving terrorists, sheiks, an American news correspondents, the KGB, the CIA, diffident keepers of the ideological flame, one wild-eye messiah, three geopolitical "rings of hostility" surrounding Moscow, and countless Soviet institutions that -- barely -- outdo those of the twentieth century in their pungent inanity.

Moscow 2042 was originally published in English in 1987, when the Berlin Wall was firmly in place and perestroika just beginning. In his new Afterword to this edition, Voinovich comments, with customary sting, on the events that inspired his novel, what has happened since publication, and the curious interplay of fiction and reality.

Book Description Mariner Books, 1990. Book Condition: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: The Russian emigration has produced a phenomenal amount of literature for reasons perhaps not wholly literary. The present novels, fine works by two radically different "stars" of the emigration, share its salient features: keen intellect and constricted subject matter (politics and autobiography). Voinovich has excelled in witty political fiction over the past 20 years. Here a time-travel story lampoons two of the intelligentsia's sacred cows: nostalgia for the monarchy and yearning for "perfect" communism free of Soviet corruption. Voinovich's sexism, combined with the genre's tendency towards one-dimensional characters, defuses his parable; but his acute depictions of bureaucratic minutiae and a wild-eyed messiah generate a current of entertaining satire. Limonov has scandalized the emigration with his fascination for sex and drugs. His autobiographical narrative displays the emigre inability to step out of characterbut what a character! "Edward," butler to a Manhattan millionaire, is a cad, an opportunist, and a brilliant observer of humanity. A "servant-philosopher," he impartially mocks Americans and Russians alike as he lives off the fat of capitalism. This book is a naughty and genuine thrill to read, outrageously peppered with thinly disguised, near-libelous anecdotes of New York and Russian celebrities.Rob Schmieder, Boston.
