Howard Thurman-Minister, philosopher, educator-has been called "one of the greatest spiritual resources of this nation." His spiritual influence on leaders of the civil rights movement and on Americans at large has bee likened to that of Martin Luther King, Jr. This anthology of Thurman's most important and eloquent writings, selected by his daughter Anne, is a passionate appraisal of the encounter between God and man and between men. Howard Thurman, born in a segregated Florida town in 1900, was recognized as one of this century's foremost religious leaders at the time of his death in 1981. He taught and lectured at over five hundred institutions around the world and wrote more than twenty books of spiritual discovery and inspiration . He served as dean of Rankin Chapel and professor theology at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He was minister and cofounder of the interdenominational Fellowship Church in San Francisco-the first fully integrated church in America. Later, he was dean of Marsh Chapel and minister-at-large of Boston University.

Anne Spencer Thurman is a lawyer and journalist. She lives in Oakland.

Vincent Harding is on the faculty of the Iliff School of Theology at the University of Denver. He is the author of There Is a River, an acclaimed study of Blacks of America.
