9780143105923: The Theory of Moral Sentiments (Penguin Classics)

Reprint of the 1759 Edition. Full, unabridged text of this landmark work in Western philosophy and economics. The Theory of Moral Sentiments was written by Adam Smith in 1759. It provided the ethical, philosophical, psychological and methodological underpinnings to Smith's later works, including The Wealth of Nations (1776), A Treatise on Public Opulence (1764), Essays on Philosophical Subjects (1795), and Lectures on Justice, Police, Revenue, and Arms (1763). A basic document in the history of Western thought and one of the most important books in the Western Canon.

Product Description:

Best known for his revolutionary free-market economics treatise The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith was first and foremost a moral philosopher. In his first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, he investigated the flip side of economic self-interest: the interest of the greater good. Smith's classic work advances ideas about conscience, moral judgement and virtue that have taken on renewed importance in business and politics.

Review:

"A worthy and distinctive addition to Adam Smith scholarship and an excellent presentation of the authentic Adam Smith to a wide audience for the 21st century. It is beauty presented, and the editorial work by Ryan Hanley is of the very highest standard. The introduction by Amartya Sen, as always, is excellent and should appeal for its clarity to a wide audience."
-Gavin Kennedy, Emeritus Professor, Heriot-Watt University

"One of the truly outstanding books in the intellectual history of the world...A global manifesto of profound significance to the interdependent world in which we live. It is indeed a book of amazing reach and contemporary relevance."
-Amartya Sen, from the Introduction
