This text (1762) is a neglected picaresque piece by one of the great 18th-century English novelists. Its most intriguing aspect is its subject matter - madness - and its ironic exploration of enlightenment notions of sanity. Much of the action takes place in and around a lunatic asylum.

He served as general editor of the series Irvine Studies in the Humanities. His books include Samuel Johnson, Biographer and The English Hero, 1660-1800. She has published articles in The Library, Analytical and Enumerative Bibliography, Eighteenth-Century Fiction, and Studies in Newspaper and Periodical History.
