Most people are familiar with the land of Oz by way of the classic 1939 film. The film was based on only the first of fourteen books about Oz in which Baum developed his vision of a socialist paradise and which garnered an immense and loyal following. Three of the novels are collected here. Tapping into a deeply rooted desire in himself and his readers to live in a peaceful country in which relationships were based not on commodity exchange but on the sharing of gifts, Baum's imaginative creation, like all great utopian literature, holds out the possibility for change.

About the Author:
Born in Chittenango in upstate New York in 1856, Lyman Frank Baum was the son of wealthy parents. After unsuccessful attempts at careers in acting, sales and journalism, Baum finally started writing when his mother-in-law encouraged him to write down the fanciful tales he'd been telling his sons for years. Although he had trouble finding a publisher, his works eventually caught the fancy of the public and he was able to make a decent living. He died in 1919.
Synopsis:
The complete and unabridged original story of Dorothy and her companions the tin woodman, the scarecrow and the cowardly lion, and her enchanting journey along the yellow brick road in search of the wonderful wizard which gave rise to the famous movie.
