About the Author:
Abraham Cowley (1618-67) was a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, supporting the Royalists in the Civil War and later imprisoned as a spy.
Edmund Waller (1606-87) was involved in an unsuccessful attempt to seize London for Charles I, for which he was banished.
John Oldham (1653-83) is best known for his satirical works.
