While he began writing in the style of Keats, Hood declared "I have to be a lively Hood for a livelihood" and devoted most of his career to comic verse. His verbal ingenuity and punning could not conceal his personal fears, nor his social protest which shaped his later poetry. Praed observed the social scene of his day - its flirtations, political intrigues - with sparkling, self-deprecating wit. Beddoes, dubbed by Ezra Pound the "prince of morticians", committed suicide, leaving behind an astonishing collection of poetry and drama full of macabre situations and ghoulish humour.

About the Author:

Thomas Hood (1799-1845) edited various London periodicals and wrote satires and parodies. Winthrop Mackworth Praed (1802-39) was a lawyer and a politician, and is remembered for his wit and lyricism. Thomas Lovell Beddoes (1803-49) practised medicine and was a writer of morbid wit.
Susan J. Wolfson teaches English at Princeton University. Peter J. Manning teaches English at the University of Southern California. Together they have edited the selected poems of Byron for Penguin Classics.
