About the Author:
Beloved and award-winning author Jean Little has garnered numerous accolades for her work. Born in Taiwan to Canadian doctors who were serving as missionaries, she was legally blind from birth. Little obtained a B.A. in English Language & Literature from the University of Toronto. She went on to write 44 more works, including novels, picture books, poetry, short stories, and two autobiographical books. She has six honorary degrees and is a Member of the Order of Canada. Little lives in Guelph, Ontario, with her family.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9?In the third volume of her memoirs, Little visits the childhood years of her mother, Flora (Gorrie) Gauld. At age four, Gorrie, her mother, and siblings left their home and missionary father in Taiwan to return to her mother's home in Canada. After several years pass, her mother returns to Taiwan, leaving the children in the care of their Aunt Jen. Though the story spans more than a decade and often skips several years with only a transitional sentence, readers will enjoy young Gorrie's petulant incapacity for being good in the tradition of Ramona Quimby or Laura Ingalls. Older readers will appreciate her developing insight and philosophical observations about her family members and her experiences in training to become a doctor. Little's fictionalized, but well-researched, account of what it is like for children to be separated from parents for years at a time will enlighten many, as well as provide an example of a life lived in dedication to the missionary ideal. It is this faith that sustains the Gaulds through separation, a cruel teacher, and a cyclone, and allows them to find humor and joy even in the worst times. Little's adherence to the detail of everyday life creates an engaging portrait of life in Kippen, Ontario, prior, to and during World War II. Fans of Little by Little (1988) and Stars Come Out Within (1991, both Viking) will certainly wish to read this volume, as will others interested in coming-of-age stories with an intellectual bent.?Tana Elias, Meadowridge Branch Library, Madison, WI
