Synopsis
Written during the final stages of her illness, "The Garden Party and Other Stories" is full of a sense of urgency and was Katherine Mansfield's last collection to be published during her lifetime. The fifteen stories, many of them set in her native New Zealand, vary in length and tone from the opening story, "At the Bay, " a vivid impressionistic evocation of family life, to the short, sharp skectch "Mrs. Brill, " in which a lonely woman's precarious sense of self is brutally destroyed when she overhears two young lovers mocking her. Sensitive revelations of human behaviour, these stories reveal Mansfield's supreme talent as an innovator who freed the story from its conventions and gave it a new strength and prestige.

About the Author
Born in New Zealand in 1888, Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp was primarily a writer of short stories. She published Prelude and The Garden Party and Other Stories before her premature death from TB in 1923. Something Childish and her journal and letters were published posthumously.

The physical setting for the stories is loosely based upon Mansfield's childhood home in Wellington and carries autobiographical undertones. "The Garden Party", the title story, centers on an annual, ritual and elaborate garden party held by the well-to-do Sheridan family. On the same day, news arrives of the accidental horse-and-cart death of a working-class man of the poorer part of the village. Told through young Laura Sheridan's reaction to the day. She had so looked forward to the party, but when her family at large simply brushed off the tradgey by deciding the unfortunate man was drunk, leads her questioning class prejudices and absurdity of class distinctions.
