About the Author:

MATTHEW ALAN CAHN is Director of the Center for Southern California Studies and Professor of Public Policy at California State University, Northridge. His research interests include California politics, urban environmental policy, and resource management. Dr. Cahn has been involved in several applied policy areas, ranging from transportation issues in metropolitan Los Angeles to the question of marine protected areas in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. He is the author or co-author of several books, including Environmental Deceptions; Thinking about the Environment; and California: An Owner's Manual. Over the years Dr. Cahn has taught at San Francisco State, San Jose State, the University of Southern California, and UC Santa Barbara.

H. ERIC SCHOCKMAN is Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Southern California. He has headed up numerous policy "thinktanks" and served as a high level consultant to the California Legislature and the City Council of Los Angeles. Dr. Schockman is the author of numerous academic manuscripts, articles, and books, including Rethinking Los Angeles and California: An Owner's Manual. He served as pro-bono Policy Director for the Elected Los Angeles Charter Reform Commission, and he currently sits as a Commissioner on the State of California's Little Hoover Commission, a government oversight and efficiency commission.

DAVID M. SHAFIE is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Ohio University. His research interests include state and local politics, environmental policy, and media and politics. He has also been a journalist and has taught at California State University, Long Beach and California State University, Fullerton.
