This book is intended to bring basic researchers, biomedical engineers, and industrial scientists up-to-date with new developments in polymers and gels. It describes the physics and chemistry underlying polymer gel phase transitions, polymer structural changes used to control biointerfactual behavior, and intelligent polymer materials which are stimuli-responsive. Biorelated Polymers and Gels provides a resource-rich discussion of the applications and potentialfor these technologies.
* One of the first books in this interdisciplinary field
* Brings the reader up-to-date quickly on new developments
* Describes intelligent materials, including stimuli-responsive polymers and their functions
* Provides a resource-rich discussion of the applications and potential for these technologies

Professor Teruo Okano is an authority in the science and technology of responsive polymer gels and controlled release using soft materials. He has been contributing to the field fundamentally by designing on the molecular level, various responsive gels tailored to the needs of specific individual applications. He is one of the first scientists to develop the controlled release matrix for cancers and other diseases. This book will be a reference for researchers and graduate students who work and study in the field of chemistry, chemical and agricultural industries, pharmacy, or medicine.About the Author:
Teruo Okano is Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tokyo Women's Medical University. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Center for Controlled Chemical Delivery at the University of Utah. In 1997, Dr. Okano became a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He received his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry from the Department of Applied Chemistry at Waseda University in 1979. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 papers and has contributed chapters to more than 80 books. Dr. Okano has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Award of the Japanese Society for Biomaterials, and the Clemson Award for Basic Research, Society for Biomaterials, both in 1997.
