Dr. Ross Fitzgerald is the principle investigator for the Laboratory for Bacterial Evolution and Pathogenesis, Centre for Infectious Diseases based at the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh. The laboratory is focused on the use of genomic and molecular tools to examine the evolution and pathogenesis of clinically important species of Staphylococci. Dr. Fitzgerald has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed research journals. Cedric Mims began as a zoologist, studying under GP Wells and JBS Haldane at University College, London. He then went to the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London, graduating in 1952. After hospital appointments he spent three years in Uganda studying tropical fevers, and then 16 years in Canberra, Australia, interspersed with two years in the USA. This was followed by a 20-year period in London as Professor of Microbiology at Guy's Hospital Medical School, where his enthusiasm for teaching found its outlet. His entire career has focused on infectious diseases and immunology, and he has produced five books and more than a hundred scientific papers on these subjects. He has four children and nine grandchildren and lives in the Sussex countryside. Professor Tony Nash is Head of Department of Veterinary Pathology and Group Leader and Director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases at the Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, UK. The Roslin Institute is the foremost research institute for livestock genetics and genomics in the UK and a major player in international research in this area. Dr. Nash has published over 100 papers in peer reviewed journals, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the United Kingdom Academy of Medical Sciences, and is a member of the Society for General Microbiology, Council of the Society for General Microbiology, British Society of Immunology, and of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
