CS is an unbranched, polydisperse, complex glycosaminoglycan extracted and purified from various tissues. This polyanion is interacting with both plasma and cells, it is able to modulate many biochemical and physiologic processes. Due to the presence of sulfate groups in different amounts and located in various positions, CS represents a very heterogeneous family of polysaccharides. therefore, the preparative approach and the analytical techniques are of paramount importance to produce CS with specific structure and properties and of pharmaceutical grade.

*Includes recent technologies and methodologies to study and understand the structure and properties of chondroitin sulfate (CS)
*Authoritative contributors from the scientific community with expertise in the field of CS and complex polysaccharides
*Detailed and accurate figures to describe and illustrate complex molecular and macromolecular structures and properties

Review:
CS expected to have major impact on future therapeutic regimens!
From the Back Cover:
Chondroitin sulfate, like other natural sulfated polysaccharides such as heparin, heparan sulfate, dermatan sulfate and keratan sulfate, is a complex macromolecule distributed among all organisms possessing a wide variety of biological functions. It is now apparent that chondroitin sulfate, and associated proteoglycans, shows implication of its sulfation pattern on growth factor binding and activities, in the development of atherosclerosis and tumor progression, in the central nervous system, and in placental malaria. Furthermore, chondroitin sulfate derived drugs may exhibit marked pharmacological activity with special enphasis on its immunological and antioxidant activities and useful in the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Features:

- Includes structure of chondroitin sulfate and the most advanced preparative and analytical techniques to determine its structure and properties
- Discusses biological role of chondroitin sulfate and its pharmacological activities
- Provides a comprehensive knowledge of chondroitin sulfate clinical efficacy and trials.
