There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that patients care more about communication than any other aspect of care. Poor communication between medical staff and their patients causes anxiety, can affect the outcome of treatment - for example where patients administer their own treatment, as in the case of diabetes - and can lead to an inefficient use of the hospital's time and resources. This report shows that standards of communication in most hospitals are often poor and suggests ways to get it right.
