Patrick Newman, a bank cashier, gives a lift to a young girl and later an enigmatic old man while driving along the east coast of Ireland. From these small incidents grows a national scandal which becomes a nightmare for Newman and eventually threatens his sanity and his life. Frank Delaney has worked as a broadcaster and has also written "James Joyce's Odyssey", "Betjeman Country" and "The Celts".
