Synopsis
Elinor Mackey has lived her life in perfect order: college, law school, successful corporate career, marriage. But suddenly her world is falling apart. Now in her late 30s, she's discovered that she and her podiatrist husband, Ted, can't have children. When Elinor withdraws from Ted into an interior world of heartbreak and anger, Ted begins an affair with Gina, the nutritionist at their gym - a young woman with an oddball son who adores Ted. Meanwhile, Elinor falls in love with the oak tree in her front yard, spreading out her sleeping bag to sleep under the stars. Lolly Winston's second novel looks beyond the manicured surface of suburbia to a world of loss, longing, lust and betrayal.

About the Author
Lolly Winston holds an MFA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College and is a freelance journalist. Her work has appeared in Redbook, Ladies Home Journal, Glamour, and many others. She has taught classes in freelance writing, and published short fiction in The Sun. She lives with her husband in Northern California.

Winston's story, reminiscent of a soap opera, features one of the currently "hot" triangles-Elinor, overachieving, high-powered lawyer and infertile wife; Ted, her successful but somehow empty yuppie husband; and Gina, his working-class but sexy and giving sports-trainer/mistress. Reader Melinda Wade relates all the details in an intimate, confident voice-best with Elinor and Gina, but solid enough with Ted. What adds spice to the predictable plot is the addition of Gina's needy 10-year-old son, who is fixated on Ted as a father substitute. How to resolve the problem? When Ted tells Elinor he still loves her, she replies, "But that's beside the point! Isn't it?" Sensitively presented, this is a listen that leaves one thinking, "Thank God, it isn't me."
