9780091895822: Join Me

Danny Wallace was bored. Just to see what would happen, he placed a whimsical ad in a local London paper. It said, simply, 'Join Me'. Within a month, he was receiving letters and emails from teachers, mechanics, sales reps, vicars, schoolchildren and pensioners - all pledging allegiance to his cause. But no one knew what his cause was. Soon he was proclaimed Leader. Increasingly obsessed and possibly power-crazed Danny risked losing his sanity and his loyal girlfriend. But who could deny the attraction of a global following of devoted joinees? A book about dreams, ambition and the responsibility that comes with power, Join Me is the true story of a man who created a cult by accident, and is proof that whilst some men were born to lead, others really haven't got a clue.

About the Author:

Danny Wallace is a Sunday Times-bestselling author who lives in London. His first book, Join Me, was described as a `word-of-mouth phenomenon' by The Bookseller and `one of the funniest stories you will ever read' by the Daily Mail. His second book, Yes Man - in which he decided to say `Yes' to everything - became a hugely successful film with Jim Carrey in the lead role. His column in ShortList magazine reaches more than 1.3 million readers weekly. He was the PPA Columnist of the Year 2011 and the Arqiva Radio Presenter of the Year 2012 for his work as the host of the triple Sony Award-winning Xfm Breakfast Show with Danny Wallace. GQ magazine has called him: `One of Britain's great writing talents'. www.dannywallace.com

From Booklist:

One day, not too long ago, the author, a journalist and television producer, placed an ad in a small London newspaper. "Join Me!" it said, and asked people to send him a photograph. That was it, pretty much: no explanation of what people you would be joining. It was an odd thing to do, but what is even odder is that people responded. Just a couple, at first, but when Wallace took his Join Me! campaign to the Internet, the trickle became a flood. Soon he had become something of a celebrity, and his--well, what was it? A commune? Cult? Collective?--project grew until it was an international phenomenon, and he had hundreds of people doing his bidding. Go forth, he bade them, and do good things. Random acts of kindness. This is the story of a bright young man who, without any real plan in mind, gathered a following that spanned the globe and who discovered it really is possible to make the world a little bit nicer. It's funny, educational, and, yes, more than a little bizarre. Lots of fun. David Pitt
