Photoshop. It's the industry standard tool for digital photo manipulation and it's great-- but only if you know how to use it properly.

Without the know-how to properly and efficiently use the tools it comes equipped with Photoshop can seem confusing, bloated and almost completely useless.

Help is at hand, however, with this 900+ page tome from Adele Greenberg and Seth Greenberg, which acts as an excellent training manual for the beginner and a handy reference work for those with a touch more experience.

Starting with an explanation of the types of hardware you'll need to run the package properly, it moves swiftly on to an introduction to editing techniques before launching into a run-down of what each of the built-in functions does.

This in itself is worthy of the cover price, but with chapters devoted to subjects such as preparing work for Web or printed output, a look at the third-party plug-ins which are currently available, a set of step-by-steps on creating special effects and a number of images created using Photoshop 5 by professionals, it becomes a bargain. As an interesting aside, the final appendix of the book provides a commentary on how these images were created which may lack a little detail but makes interesting reading for those keen to create their own digital masterpieces.
