"Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages, 1999 Edition" is a full-fledged Web treasury featuring thousands of interesting, current and useful Internet resources -- Web sites, Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists -- in over 150 categories. Readers around the world enjoy Harley's offbeat humor and opinionated commentary -- all in a format that's as easy to use as a telephone book. Last year, the Five-Year Anniversary Edition propelled the guide to international best-seller status with over 1.5 million copies sold. And now, with 2 million books in print, "Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages" is one of the bestselling computer books ever -- and the best-selling Web directory of all time! First published in 1992 as the original Internet Yellow Pages -- before the Web even existed -- "Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages" played an important role in popularizing the Web. Like graphical browsers and modern Internet connection software, "Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages" was among the very first tools to make it easy for just about anyone to experience the joys and wonders of online exploration. Harley revises and updates his book each year, checking each site for accuracy and quality, and adding hundreds of brand new listings to every edition. In fact, readers are certain to find "Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages, 1999 Edition" to be Harley's best work to date. This premier edition features the best and most current collection of 'Harley Hahn-Approved' Web sites you'll ever point your browser to. It provides listings for hundreds of popular areas of the Web with a special focus on genealogy and online shopping, and includes a special CD-ROM. The CD-ROMincludes the entire book in a fully-searchable hypertext format that allows you to point and click to links in any site. In addition, it offers many visual improvements such as special sidebars, boxes, and 100 new illustrations throughout.

Search engines and subject trees are great if you want to find every last reference to some obscure topic, but they are not the best if you want a refined list of sites about gardening, fishing, Paul McCartney or some other popular topic. Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages allows you to look up a subject and see an annotated list of sites the author recommends. It's an old idea, but Hahn implements it well. It's a great way to locate Internet resources you otherwise wouldn't have found, and Hahn's light writing style is fun.
Some of Hahn's organisational choices seem strange. You can look up Canada directly and find lots of information, but you have to look for all other countries of the world under "Governments: International"--a strange structure. Cross-referencing is lacking, too: You have to look in the index to find out that the wine sites are listed under "food". You'll probably want to use the index if you're doing anything other than casual browsing. In fact, casual (you might say random) browsing is what this book is best for. The author has located some cool resources, and you'll enjoy his guided tour. Scan the print version, or use the index on the companion CD-ROM.
Parents, be aware that Hahn covers all aspects of the Web, and though there's a lot of kid- and general-interest stuff listed here, there's also a little bit about adult subjects (the Kama Sutra, for example, and the infamous Terrorist's Handbook). --David Wall, Amazon.com
