From the Publisher:
A broad scope of readings. Selections from social and behavioral sciences provide analysis and explanation. Literary and journalistic writings (biography, autobiography, fiction, and reportage) give compelling insights into personal experience.
Selections focus on the whole of the American experience. While most readers focus exclusively on the experiences of minorities victimized by prejudice and discrimination, this work also includes the experiences of the privileged and those who resist change.
Themes of Identity, Power, and Change. Students are encouraged to clarify personal identity issues related to ethnicity, culture, class and gender; to understand how access to power and privilege affects her/his personal life and future ambitions; and to see how discrimination and prejudice are challenged by those who effect change within themselves and others. The last section also examines the beliefs and actions of those who resist change.
Examines trends towards change. Part Seven analyzes the ways in which taking action occur and Part Eight introduces examples of effective change makers.
Beginning pedagogy. Thoughtful and stimulating introductions to each Part guide the student's reading by providing important background material. Each introduction gives historical context, essential definitions and concepts, and insights into the impact of events or people profiled in the selections.
Questions for thought. "Understanding the Reading" and "Writing Responses" follow each selection to reinforce the material and provide out-of-class writing assignments.
New selections. 30 new readings (of a total of 138) cover timely topics including: the economic struggles of women on welfare, the murder of James Byrd, masculinity and disability, race and ethnic images in the media, inequities between women's and men's school sports programs, the changing social and political construction of racial and ethnic identity, sexual harassment, and the impact of the growing numbers of contingent workers.
