9780072868920: The Economy Today

Synopsis

Brad Schiller's text, The Economy Today, 9/e, is noted for its three great strengths: readability, policy orientation, and pedagogy. His accessible writing style engages students and brings some of the excitement of domestic and global economic news into the classroom. Schiller emphasizes how policymakers must choose between government intervention and market reliance to resolve the core issues of what, how, and for whom to produce. This strategic choice is highlighted throughout the full range of micro, macro, and international issues. Every chapter ends with a policy issue that emphasizes the markets vs. government dilemma. And Schiller packs his chapters with the facts of economic life real stories, not fables. This is a book that teaches economics in a relevant context and with careful pedagogy. Schiller 9e is for students motivated by real-world policy issues who want to become economically literate. This is a book students actually READ. Schiller is also known for its cutting-edge and current coverage of today’s issues.

From the Publisher

In order to best explain the principles of economics, The Economy Today carefully explains the differences between reality and theory. This real-world focus is the central theme of this text. Throughout every chapter in Schiller, there is a constant interplay between theoretical principles and real-world events. Through the use of recent examples from journals and newspapers, The Economy Today offers the most complete coverage of the issues and events to complement the real-world focus.

In addition to the discussion of the principles of economics, Schiller feels that the text must "teach" basic principles and reinforce them with a variety of pedagogical aids. Hence, The Economy Today is noted for its numerous pedagogical aids that enhance the students learning and retention ability through every chapter. Numerous examples, colorful, well-marked graphs, chapter preview and review, running glossary, narrative summaries, discussion questions, and numerical and graphical problems constitute each chapter's pedagogical tools. In the 6th edition, we introduced a full set of graphing problems in the back of the text, to help instructors

A well-received descriptive chapter was added in the 6th edition to introduce the American economy within the global economy (Chapter 2). This chapter is descriptive and self-contained, and can be taught at any point an instructor feels appropriate to his or her course. The chapter addresses three key themes in the overall presentation: what, how, and for whom the economy produces.

The entire text is developed around the central theme of government intervention versus market reliance.

Completely integrates coverage of the Keynesian model into the AS/AD framework in Chapters 9 and 10.

Offers two chapters on Aggregate Supply, one focused on short-run determinants, the second on long-run possibilities for productivity and growth.

Explicitly demonstrates through new tables and charts the contrasting models of Keynesian, monetarist, and supply-side economics.

"World View," "In the News," and "Economy Tomorrow" have been completely updated. In addition a special section in the testbank now supplies quiz and exam questions directly related to boxed material.

Numerous examples of the Cuban economy are used to highlight the problems of communism and to outline a pending transition.
