The fourth edition has been completely updated to reflect current technology in this ever-evolving field. This edition also features two new co-authors: Janet Rutledge of the University of Maryland at Baltimore and Paul Crilly of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, in addition to author Bruce Carlson of RPI.

The book is intended for an introductory communications course and is written at a level appropriate for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students.

The fourth edition covers both analog and digital communications. It features worked examples and exercises for students to solve within chapters, helping them to master new concepts as they are introduced.

From the Publisher:
The book now has a brand new chapter on spread spectrum, which includes multiple access methods and wireless systems.
A number of topics have been added or expanded, including: DSL (digital subscriber lines) including ADSL and ISDN; SONET, Computer Networks, including OSI and TCP/IP protocols and data encryption; digital audio recording, HDTV and expanded treatment of receivers; and turbo coding, trellis coded modulation and updated and expanded treatment of convolutional coding.
New worked out examples and end-of-chapter problems have been added to further update the book.
The pedagogy of the book has been greatly enhanced to further the reader's understanding of the material. The chapters each open with a listing of the main sections, a general statement of what is to come, and objectives. Optional topics within chapters are marked with a star. Key terms are boldfaced when their definitions are provided. Examples, which often have matching exercises, are cleary marked for easy reference. Key ideas are boxed to distinguish them for the reader.
