9780070707337: History of the Living Theater

This work presents the history of theatre from ancient Greece and Rome to the present day. It demonstrates the liveliness, vitality and distinctiveness of theatre as it has unfolded through the ages, and emphasizes the constantly changing nature of theatre, as well as the threads that are woven through several eras and countries. It also shows how the heritage of theatre can be found in the productions we see today. Coverage of the development of theatre in Japan, China and India is included. Timelines help keep students firmly fixed in time, and listings of the significant theatrical and political events of the period under discussion are provided. The work also contains biographies, which focus on leading figures in theatre history (such as playwrights, actors and directors), as well as on individuals from under-represented populations, which should give students a sense of the diversity of people who helped shape the theatre. This edition has greater emphasis on women and non-elites; "Debates in Theater History" boxes, which outline a debated point in the research of a particular era; an expanded introduction, which includes a section on recent historical approaches, such as revisionist history, feminist history, deconstructionism, multicultural history and semiotics, which exposes students to the different ways in which theatre history is studied and analyzed; and expanded sections on the French and Spanish Renaissance.

From the Publisher:

Seventeen new biographies have been added to this edition, including histories of Lope de Rueda, The Female Wits, Eva Le Gallienne, Anna Deveare Smith, and Wole Soyinka. These profiles provide details of personal histories in addition to productions, dates, and photographs.
Expanded discussions on current topics such as the excavations of the Globe and the Rose in London, and Professor John J. Allen's important work on the Corral del Principe in Madrid.
Revised throughout to reflect current scholarship, especially Chapter 4, Early Asian Theater.
New material on Contemporary theater, African American theater, and on Russian theater in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Debates in History: These brief essays focus on points of disagreement among scholars and historians, underscoring the fact that there are multiple interpretations of theater history.
Biography sections in every chapter focus on the artists who created theater. An integral part of the text, these sections are highlighted with photos, rather than set apart in boxes, so that the flow of Living Theateris not interrupted.
Timelines relate important dates in theater to significant events in politics, economics, and the other arts.
Maps give a sense of geographical context and indicate changing national boundaries over time.
A lively illustration program including photographs, plans, and drawings tied directly to the text.
