This book provides students with a comprehensive and systematic introduction to political theories and ideologies of the 19th and 20th centuries. The text is organized into four parts. Part I describes the leading ideologies of the twentieth century. Part II describes the totalitarian ideologies of the twentieth century. Part III deals with the three ideologies that have dominated the politics of democratic societies in the twentieth century. Part IV examines three nascent ideologies that are becoming increasingly potent political forces. In the concluding chapter entitled "Beyond Ideologies" various versions of "the end of ideology" theory are considered.

Historical Development of Ideologies gives students an intellectual history of political thought during the past 200 years and an understanding of how various ideologies have developed in response to other ideas that dominated political, social and economic life.
Chapter One provides a brief history of ideology and criteria for evaluating competing ideologies.
To clarify and systemize ideologies, a framework for describing various political ideologies is presented in detail in Chapter One and is employed throughout subsequent chapters.
Bold-faced key concepts, throughout the text, are defined in the glossary to aid in student comprehension.
Each chapter begins with a presentation of the main ideas of each ideology and a brief discussion of its historical importance.
Each chapter ends with a summary pointing out the contributions of each ideology and suggests its limitations and failures.
Throughout the text, examples are provided on how ideological principles have been applied in the past or could be applied in the future.
