Sections and subsections contain brief editor's introductions which discuss the nature and scope of scripture within each religion, and the history of the scripture presented.
The book uses recent versus outdated public-domain translations and is sensitive to competing translations (for example, uses the Jewish Publication Society's translation of the Tanakh rather than translations of the Old Testament associated with Christianity).
The selections are confined only to scriptures of religions that are practiced today and have a wide sphere of influence (i.e., excludes dead traditions such as ancient Greek, Mesopotamia, or Egyptian religions), emphasizes only religions that have a body of written literature (i.e., excludes African and Native American religions), and focuses on texts that discuss the lives and teachings of religious founders and present central doctrines
