Dr. Butler earned her Ph.D. at the University of Alabama and completed her postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley. She developed a particular interest in assertive training for women as a result of her own transition from the academic to the professional world. "I was confident of my professional skills, but I had grown up with all the traditional images of how a woman should function in society: be well mannered, ladylike, and protected, never express negative feelings or present yourself as competent. I saw other women caught in the same bind. My programs emerged from an intense personal involvement with the plight of women today."
