9780062297693: Sheltering Rain

A newly rejacketed edition of the 2002 novel Sheltering Rain by Jojo Moyes, the bestselling author of Me Before You and two-time winner of the RNA Novel of the Year award.

When twenty-one year old Joy meets handsome naval officer Edward at an ex-pat party in 1950s Hong Kong, the last thing she expects is to fall in love. Quickly wedded, she leaves to travel the world with her new husband. But she soon discovers that married life isn't all that it seems . . .

In 1980, Joy's young daughter Kate mysteriously flees the family home. Fifteen years later, Kate's own daughter Sabine leaves London in search of grandparents she has never known. When the family is finally reunited, hidden tensions come to the surface, uncovering a dark secret which has been deeply buried for years . . .

Review:

Although the story jumps frequently from place to place and from one generation to the next, the author is able to make these effortless transitions for the reader. The characters are strong, believable and endearing - and will evoke recognition and sympathy from all ages . . . an enjoyable read and a promising debut novel. ( Sunday Express)

This perceptive novel does the mothers-and-daughters thing in page-turning style . . . Be sure that your bookmark is a hankie ( Elle)

An emotional roller-coaster of a read ( Company)

The attitudes of these strong-minded women and their generations are masterfully captured ( Hello)

I enjoyed this novel very much ( Rosamunde Pilcher)

A very beautiful and very moving story ( Lesley Pearse)

This is a remarkable first novel, rich and deep and full of wonderfully realized characters. Oh, these women! ( Anne Rivers Siddons)

A really really good book. One of the best I have read for you. I could identify with so much... It had everything going for it. It was well written with well rounded characters and a very good story to boot! Marks: 9/10. I am almost tempted to give it a 10/10! ( Sarah Broadhurst book blog)

A thoughtful first novel about mothers, daughters and lovers ( Daily Mail)

Engrossing ( Woman & Home)

From the Author:

This book was loosely inspired by the love affair between my Australian grandmother and Scottish grandfather, who met when he, as a young naval officer, was invited to an Australian young ladies "reception" during the Second World War. They fell in love, and within a week he had asked her to marry him. She then didn't see him for a year, but still had the faith to make a six weeks voyage on a troop ship to marry a man she didn't know. I realised that noone would have the faith to do that now, (unless they ended up on the Trisha show) and it got me thinking about how our expectations have changed, and how women's increased freedoms have not necessarily always worked out for the better.
The book itself weaves two love stories through fifty years, and three generations of a family at war with itself. It is a combination of things; a saga, with comedy and tragedy, an epic love story, and a mystery. I wanted to give value for money!
I have been astonished by the reception to the book, and to the fact that that a book about such a specific set of characters has been sold now in ten countries. Those who have read it seem to recognise themselves in someone in it - not always those characters I would have expected.
I hope those who read it will be taken somewhere they hadn't expected to go, that they will be swept up, entertained and moved.
All I ever really wanted was to write a good story, the kind that, like a good film, stays with you for a little while after you've finished it. I hope, if you read this book, it will at least do that for you.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Me Before You, the basis for the major motion picture, comes the touching, unforgettable story of three generations of Irish women faced with the fundamental truths of love, duty, and the unbreakable bond that unites mothers and daughters. Estranged from her mother since she ran away from her rural Irish home as a young woman, Kate swore a future oath that she d always be a friend to her daughter, Sabine. But history has a way of repeating itself, and Kate now faces an ever-widening chasm between herself and her daughter. With Sabine about to make her own journey to Ireland to see the grandmother Kate abandoned, Kate is left wondering how they ever made it here, and what she can do to close the gap between them. For Joy, seeing her granddaughter is a dream come true. After the painful separation from Kate, she s looking forward to having time with Sabine. Yet almost as soon as the young woman arrives, the lack of common ground between them deflates her enthusiasm. And when Sabine s impetuous, inquisitive nature forces Joy to face long-buried secrets from her past, she realizes that perhaps it s time to finally heal old wounds.
