9780062220790: The Good Inn

"A book based on a soundtrack score that has not yet been composed for a feature film that does not yet exist." Pixies frontman Black Francis has approached writing his first book as he would do a song: with inventiveness and originality. The Good Inn tells the story of an eighteen-year-old known only as Soldier Boy who, after escaping a devastating explosion at the French port of Toulon, sets out on a bizarre journey across France. Navigating his way past homicidal gypsies, combative soldiers and porn-peddling peasants, he takes refuge at The Good Inn - and promptly finds himself centre stage in the making of the world's first narrative pornographic movie. Unique and vividly imagined, The Good Inn is a touchingly comic story that brings turn-of-the-century France to life.

About the Author:

Black Francis is an American singer, songwriter and musician. Best know as the frontman for cult rock band Pixies, he has also had a successful solo career under the name Frank Black. His songs have inspired musicians from Tom Yorke to Kurt Cobain, the latter claiming that "Smells like teen Spirit" was his "attempt to rip off the Pixies". Black Francis reformed The Pixies in 2004 and continues to tour with them. Josh Frank is the author of the Pixies biography Fool the World. He has also written a biography of the musician Peter Ivers, In Heaven Everything is Fine. Steven Appleby has created cartoon strips for many magazines and newspapers, including The Guardian, the NME, the Times and the Sunday Telegraph. The author of over 20 books, he has also worked in TV, radio and musical theatre.

Book Description It Books, 2014. Book Condition: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: From Pixies front man, Black Francis, comes a bold and visually arresting illustrated novel about art, conflict, and the origins of a certain type of cinema. In 1907, the French battleship Ina was destroyed when munitions it was carrying exploded, killing 120 people. A nitrocellulose-based weapon propellant had become unstable with age and self-ignited. In 1908, La Bonne Auberge became the earliest known pornographic film. It depicted a sexual encounter between a French soldier and an innkeeper's daughter. Like all films at the time, and for decades afterward, it was made with a highly combustible nitrocellulose-based film stock. Loosely based on these historical events, The Good Inn follows the lone survivor of the Ina explosion as he makes his way through the French countryside, has a sexual adventure with an innkeeper's daughter, and even more deeply into a strange counter universe. It is a volatile world where war and art exist side by side. It is also the very real story of the people who made the first narrative pornographic film. The novel weaves together real historical facts to recreate this lost piece of history, as seen through the eyes of a shell-shocked soldier who finds himself the subject and star of the world's first stag film. Through Soldier Boy's journey we explore the power of memory, the simultaneously destructive and healing power of light, and how the early pioneers of stag films helped shape the film industry for generations to come.
