9780045510801: Planetary Landscapes

This introduction to planetary geology concentrates on the surface features of the planets and satellites of our Solar System. The author first discusses the primary processes that shape our planet, Earth, and the geomorphology of the objects in the Solar System. The second edition includes new information about Venus and a new chapter on Neptune. The book is beautifully illustrated with high-resolution black-and-white photographs from recent space probes and orbiting spacecraft, and with explanatory diagrams. Each chapter starts with a description of the general physiography and terrain units, then the geomorphic processes that created them are discussed. Finally a synopsis of the geologic evolution of the surface is given. The selected references at the end include original papers, review articles and books.

Review:

...the definitive summary text for undergraduate students of surface processes... - Journal of the British Astronomy Association; Review of the first edition: I know of no other publication that provides such a rich collection of planetary photographs - there is hardly a page with out an illustration, and many cover almost the entire 11 x 8.5 format. The figures are well captioned and annotated, the spacecraft images are identified by number and information is provided on how copies might be obtained. - Nature; The reproduction of the images...is among the best I have seen...The overall effect is stunning - Nature; ...the definitive summary text for undergraduate students of surface processes... - Journal of the British Astronomy Association; Review of the first edition: I know of no other publication that provides such a rich collection of planetary photographs - there is hardly a page with out an illustration, and many cover almost the entire 11 x 8.5 format. From Library Journal:

Greeley, a prominent planetary geologist, has assembled an impressive collection of black-and-white images of planetary and satellite surfaces, accompanied by a lucid explanatory text on the various geomorphic processes responsible for shaping these surfaces. Intended mainly for Earth scientists, planetary scientists, and astromomers, the book will also appeal to others seeking a better understanding of the results of space missions to the Moon and the planets. The lack of any color imagery detracts somewhat from the book's appeal. Reminiscent in some ways of W.K. Hartmann's planetary geology textbook Moon and Planets (Wadsworth, 1983), Greeley's book focuses more narrowly on planetary surfaces. Thomas E. Margrave, formerly with Physics & Astronomy Dept., Univ. of Montana, Missoula
