On 12 August 1943, on Midway Island, Lt. Cdr. I. J. Galantin took command of the fleet submarine <em>USS Halibut</em>. For the next fourteen months, Galantin and his offers and crew would play their part in the unrelenting attack on Japan's navy and merchant marine. But it was in Luzon Strait in November 1944 that the submarine and its crew underwent their greatest ordeal. Detected and driven down while attacking a decoy, <em>Halibut </em>was subjected to an assault of appalling ferocity. Badly damaged, the crippled sub and crew endured hours of desperate manoeuvring and helpless waiting before the enemy finally gave up.

Synopsis:
The story of the fleet submarine USS "Halibut's" last mission, written by the man who took command of the vessel on August 12, 1943. He and his crew, played their part in the Silent Service's unrelenting attack on Japan's navy and merchant marine for the next 14 months. With Pete Galatin as skipper, "Halibut" undertook four patrols, each successively more dangerous as the enemy was forced ever closer to his heavily mined and protected waters. After a two-month respite for overhauling and refitting, Galatin and his comrades took "Halibut" westward for one more patrol in Luzon Strait, where "Halibut" was subjected to a depth-charge assault. It was "Halibut's" last mission - she was so severely damaged that she was sent back home for good. Those who served aboard her were awarded decorations and the ship was given the prized Navy Unit Commendation. In the years that followed, Pete Galatin rose to Four-Star Admiral rank in the United States Navy.
