    Review:
There's more to Queer Europe than gay Paree(Paris). From London and Lisbon to Athens, Amsterdam and Prague, Europe has long been a hot travel destination for gays and lesbians. Until recently, though, there was no good guide that catered to gay and lesbian tastes and needs. With Frommer's Gay & Lesbian Europe, however, that's all changed. What do gays and lesbians want in a guidebook? Like anyone else, they want the lowdown on transportation and lodging, sightseeing and shopping, food and nightlife. But there are also such issues as comfort levels and cultural expectations, finding gay-owned or gay-friendly establishments, meeting fellow gay travellers and fraternising with the locals-- topics left out of your typical straight travel guide.

If, for example, you're heading to Paris, you might want to know about the rustic gay restaurant that looks like a French farmhouse (complete with dog napping in the corner), and hearty recipes passed down from the chef's grandfather--as well as which hotels are gay-friendly, from sumptuous to quaint. There are sight-seeing standards such as the Louvre, Notre Dame, and Arc de Triomphe, plus extras like the Erotic Museum, Proust's home town of Illiers-Combray, and Le Marais--the heart of gay Paris. Read further and you'll find gyms that cater to gay crowds, gay and lesbian bookstores, plus stores that specialise in chocolates, club wear, and gourmet foods. There's a full section on bars--gay, lesbian and mainstream--as well as cabarets, supper clubs, dance clubs, sex clubs, gay saunas and leather shops.

There's a lot of tongue-in-cheek cleverness here, with chapter headings like "London: The Queen's at Home," "The Czech Republic: Coming Out of the Past," and "Greece: Where It All Began." There's also sensitive and useful information about what's accepted where, from hotel reservations to public displays of same-sex affection. For anyone who's here and queer, but wants to be queer and there, this is the guide to take. --Stephanie Gold

    About the Author:
About the Authors Sexy, sassy, sissy scribe David Andrusia divides his time between the East Village and East Hollywood while updating his books New York Hot & Hip and L.A. Hot & Hip, part of the travel series Vogue called "the hippest." David's Gay Europe (Penguin Putnam/Perigee, 1995) was the first gay travel tome from a major American publisher and a Barnes & Noble Readers' Catalog Selection. He's also the author of the celebrated career guide The Perfect Pitch (Warner Books) and the upcoming Branding Yourself (Ballantine); his book Natural Healing for Your Baby and Child (with Andrea Candee) came out from Pocket Books in summer 1999. This GWM stands 5′11⅛″, weighs 160 lbs., and has flaxen hair and aquamarine eyes. Please respond only if your name is Sergio or Yves. Hot and handsome Haas Mroue (5′10″, 150 lbs., 33, brown eyes and hair) has published his poems, short stories, and travel articles in magazines and journals in the United States and Europe; his work has been broadcast on the BBC World Service, New York's WBAI radio, and Starz! cable network, among others. A graduate of UCLA Film School, this GWM has lived in Paris and London and is currently at work on a screenplay and a novel. His first book, Beirut Seizures, was published in 1993. He divides his time between San Diego (where he plays) and the Olympic Peninsula (where he writes). He can be reached at haasmro@aol.com. Donald Olson is a novelist, playwright, and travel writer. A busybody both home and abroad, this GWM (6′, 160 lbs., blue eyes, full head of blond hair, gym-trained body) has contributed travel stories to the New York Times and many non-sexually explicit national publications. He's the author of guidebooks to Oregon and Berlin, as well as The Complete Idiot's Travel Guide to London for Macmillan Travel. His gay novels include The Secrets of Mabel Eastlake, Paradise Gardens, and A Movie. Bantam London published his last novel, The Confessions of Aubrey Beardsley; his play Beardsley has been produced in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and London. Queer Corners, his new novel inspired by the anti-gay-rights battles in Oregon, was published by BridgeCity Books in June 1999. With his name, Todd Savage figured that a lucrative career as a stripper, porn star, or sex-advice columnist awaited, but to save his family some grief he settled on the life of an itinerant writer. This blue-eyed, salt-and-pepper-haired, boyish 33-year-old Chicago GWM has played tourist in his own town as the author of and/or contributor to Frommer's Chicago '99 and Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Chicago. He also contributes to Chicago Reader, the Chicago Tribune, Chicago magazine, The Advocate, and Town & Country.
