A Writer's Guide to the Top Literary Agents gives readers the inside story of some of the most respected and influential names in the business today, from Georges Borchardt and Sandra Dijkstra to John Brockman and Molly Friedrich. It helps writers learn the role of agents, understand their importance in book publishing, and identify the characteristics of a good agent/author relationship. No other book gives the in-depth look at agents that this book does.

From the Author:
What are agents like--and why are they important to authors?
There are plenty of reference books listing literary agents, and even one or two that spell out their likes and dislikes, on the basis of questionnaires that they fill out (or in many cases don't). But I've never read anything that tried to give a sense of what makes a literary agent tick: how he or she got into the business, how difficult it was getting up and running and finding their first clients, and then some of their particular triumphs in the deals they made, the writing careers they helped to launch. My thesis is that in many ways agents, rather than publishers or editors, are the key players in an author's life today, and that finding the right one is an essential step toward a writing career. The agent is not only an editor, a savvy and powerful advocate and a hand-holder, but also (sometimes) a lawyer, a banker, a cheery supporter in hard times, and the only solid rock in a publishing ocean that seems in a perpetual state of storm. I hope any wrier or would-be writer, after reading the advice and interviews in my book, would know much more about what to look for in an agent, and how to find a supportive and congenial one.
Synopsis:
Offers would-be authors inside information on the importance of having an agent, what areas they specialize in, their views on publishing, how to submit proposals, and the characteristics of a good agent/author relationship.
