ea. vol: illus. by author. unpaged. (Teddybear Board Bks.). CIP. Four Winds: Macmillan. Mar. 1986. BD $2.95. PreS Gretz's familiar teddy bears are featured in this quartet of bedtime board books. In Too Dark! , a teddy bear mistakes familiar bedroom objects for scary things in the dark; the problem is solved when she takes the objects to bed with her so she can't see them. I'm Not Sleepy finds John wanting to play with the other teddy bears who are sleepy. One crafty bear initiates a game of follow-the-leader and then leads John to bed. In Ready for Bed , Andrew carefully gathers everything he'll need for bed but a misstep brings all his careful preparations down around his ears. In Hide-and-Seek , Louise tries to find the perfect place to hide; nothing seems quite right until she finds her bed and snuggles in. The illustrations, while colorful and bright, have a tendency to overflow with detail, suggesting that the books would be suitable for an audience older than the usual toddler board book crowd. In general, the writing is undistinguished and somewhat choppy. Unless you have a unusually large calling for board books and/or an insatiable demand for Gretz' "Teddy Bear" books (Four Winds), stick with Wells' Max's Bedtime (Dial, 1985) for bedtime board book enjoyment.
