Synopsis

This book is a study in contrasts between Cardinal Wolsey and Secretary Cromwell, the two ministers who dominated the reign of Henry VIII. The one, a cardinal archbishop, was the last English statesman in the medieval tradition, the other the layman who broke the power of the Church to become the architect of the modern national state. It was Cromwell who served Wolsey faithfully during the Cardinal's rise to pre-eminence in church and state; who remained faithful during his eclipse; and who was to destroy virtually everything for which Wolsey had stood during his own supremacy in the 1530s. And both men, ultimately, fell victim to the capricious authority of the monarch each in turn served so devotedly.
