9780007431748: Melting the Snow on Hester Street

1993 With stories about consciousness and conscience, about heroes and horrors, this volume offers two dozen dazzling stories from some of science fiction's greatest writers. - Splendors of the future and the past stand side by side in this terrific collection of the best science fiction of the year. Ranging from visions of disaster - of cataclysmic asteroids, of war on Earth, of experiments gone awry -- to dazzling futures in which humanity and its creations are immortal and content... the future is sometimes frightening, sometimes awesome, and sometimes just plain weird... The past is no less fabulous, as master fabulists portray the way things might have been (and might yet be) in fascinating worlds like the Far East, the Kansas Territory, Martinique, Vietnam, and the Lower East Side of New York.

An absorbing, glamorous read.' Viv Groskop, RED BOOK CLUB 'gripping... powerful, evocative' THE LADY "Waugh blends fact and fiction in an intoxicating tale of life under the glittering veneer of Tinsel Town" Daily Record
