From the Back Cover

Since its first appearance in 1994, the 'Collins Encyclopaedia of Scotland' has established itself as the unrivalled reference work on all things Scottish. Containing almost a million words, over four thousand separate entries and nearly five hundred illustrations, it is a mine of information, an inexhaustible source of enlightenment and an irresistibly readable guide. It now appears in a wholly updated and revised new edition.

This new edition contains over a thousand additions to existing entries, plus more than hundred completely new entries. These include a welcome to the arrival of the 'Scottish Parliament' and 'Dolly the Sheep' and to the return of the 'Stone of Scone', as well as farewells to such famous deaparted Scots as 'Naomi Mitchison. Alec Douglas Home, Norman MacCaig, Sorley' and 'Fitzroy Maclean' and 'Billy Bremner'.

The encyclopaedia covers every aspect of Scotland's past, her people, arts, environment and continuing traditions. As a comprehensive gazetteer of Scottish topography and a dictionary of Scottish biography, it distils the heritage of a nation. There are entries on individual architects, artists, botanists, Covenanters, educationalists, engineers, explorers, inventors, 'Jacobites', kings and queens, missionaries, poets, scientists, soldiers, sportsmen, surgeons, saints and sinners; while topics such as 'agriculture, fishing, football, golf, heraldry, 'the' law, shipbuilding' and 'whisky' are examined in detail. 'Clans', castles, regiments and antiquities no less than political protests, religious disputes, sport and aesthetic movements are treated authoritatively and inclusively by an experienced editorial partnership and over a hundred contributors.

Matching accessibility with scholarship, the 'Collins Encyclopaedia of Scotland' has become a standard source for Scottish nationals, for Scots worldwide, and for anyone with an interest in Scotland.
