As snow falls over the peaks and lowlands, the familiar becomes unfamiliar, the cosy frightening. Twelve people, nine men and three women, head towards the warm lights on the horizon and the comfort of the remote White Cavalier Hotel. For mine host, Fred, it could be Christmas: but each of his motley guests carries the unknown – and sometimes dangerous – baggage of secret lives.
The illicit lovers, the father and son bound by hate and affection, the prisoner of marriage and the wild ageing bikers are trapped in a haven which, with one of them a terrorist, turns into a hell of violence and death.
'Alan Sillitoe, the long-distance runner of English novelists, shows no signs of flagging in this, his twenty-fifth volume of fiction. This is Alan Sillitoe on the top of his form, writing not merely an adventure story, but a profound novel concerning tortured human lives'
EVENING STANDARD
'The ticking bomb provides a natural impetus for the narrative, while the apocalyptic scenario enables Sillitoe to explore what happens to human beings in circumstances of extremity'
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
'Mr Sillitoe's narrative style is brisk and to the point, and the novel builds quickly to an explosive finale'
IRISH PRESS
'Alan Sillitoe has never been bleaker than in his new novel 'Snowstop''
TODAY
''Snowstop' is solidly confident and professionally executed'
