The series aims to develop students' competence in basic English writing skills and composition. Each unit in the two books is based on a cartoon to provide visual stimuli for the writing exercises. Many of the most popular contemporary cartoonists are featured: Andy Capp, Hargreaves and Thelwell. Each unit contains a variety of exercises designed to practice structures and notions and also to extend students' vocabulary. Other exercises develop basic writing skills such as sentence building and paragraph writing, and the skils which are necessary for different types of composition: narrative, description and dialogue. Each unit also provides the opportuntity for classroom discussion. The series forms part of the "Collins English Library" scheme. Book 1 is written within the structures of levels 1 and 2 of the scheme, which book 2 progresses up to levels 3 and 4. Any "outside" vocabulary is explained by reference to the pictures.
