Synopsis:
The "Soundworks" early literacy programme aims to provide early intervention for those children who are proving slow in learning to read and write. It uses a structured, multisensory approach to develop phonological awareness, and there are assessment tests to place the child at the beginning of the programme. The programme is designed to be used by teacher assistants without supervision, but under the guidance of a teacher when necessary. The manual contains step-by-step instructions, with a certain amount of theory so that the non-teacher can understand the aim of the sessions. As well as the teacher's manual, there is a video on managing the programme effectively, a copymaster set, and a programme kit containing: picture cards - blend, key word, end sounds, split words and vowels; game cards; letter blocks; word building boards with mounted wooden blocks; reading sheets; and prompt cards.
