Detective novel featuring Strangeways of Scotland Yard, originally published in 1947; to supplement his literary income, poet Cecil Day Lewis (1904-72) wrote 20 detective fiction novels under the pseudonym of Nicholas Blake, though at time of first publication this identity was publicly unknown.
