From the Back Cover:

'The Collins Book of Best-Loved Verse' brings together in one volume all those poems that run in the bloodstream – learnt at school, half-remembered, evocative for a lifetime; from 'Jabberwocky' to 'Jerusalem'; from 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' to 'Joan Hunter Dunn'; from Wilfred Owen to Edward Lear.

Both the familiar and the newly memorable, the traditional and the soon-to-be traditional, are represented in this collection. It will be a rich source of nostalgia and discovery, an indispensable companion for winter evenings and summer afternoons.

Charles Osborne, poet, author and musicologist, was assistant editor of the 'London Magazine' for eight years before joining the Arts Council of Great Britain, where he was Literature Director from 1971 until 1986. He was also for some years Director of 'Poetry International', the annual London festival of spoken poetry.

His books include 'Kafka (1967), The Complete Operas of Verdi (1969), Wagner and his World (1977), W. H. Auden: the Life of a Poet (1980), Schubert and his Vienna (1985),' and two volumes of poetry, 'Swansong (1968)' and 'Letter to W. H. Auden and Other Poems (1984).'

I shot an arrow into the air,

I sprang to the stirrup, and Joris, and he;

I strove with none, for none was worth my strife:

I think that I shall never see

I wander'd lonely as a cloud

I was angry with my friend:

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,

If I should die, think only this of me:

If you can keep your head when all about you

In summertime on Bredon

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan

'Is there anybody there?' said the Traveller,

It was a lover and his lass,
