9780001983236: A Bear's Dream

On a snowy Alaskan mountain, bears are sleeping through the winter. Far, below, in the city, a child holds her teddy bear and wonders what the real bears dream about.

The snowy fields become green meadows and twin bear cubs leave their cave for the first time. A year in their lives is evoked through the eyes of the little girl as, just like them, she goes paddling, fishing and berry picking.

This magical journey into the world of bears is evoked in hypnotically lyrical verse and complemented by wonderfully atmospheric illustrations. We view the bears through the eyes of the girl and contrast her world with theirs, yet the perspective on bear life is a realistic one.

Review:

‘An evocative and informative story of the life of bears in the wild juxtaposed with the experiences of a little girl and her own bear, whom she keeps close to her at all times. The poetic text beautifully portrays the wild world of the brown bear, the illustrations are handsome and there is information about how the brown bears survive, the balance of nature, and the human reaction to the bear in different ages and cultures. This book will appeal to older readers who want more information about their environment but still enjoy picture books.’

From the Back Cover:

In a mountain at the top of the world, bears are sleeping through the snowy winter. A little girl gazes up from her window and wonders what they dream about…

In her dark cave on a bed of woody bark, a mother bear gives birth to twins and the cycle of life begins.

As the year turns and snowy fields become green meadows,'just like a bear' the child goes paddling, fishing and berry picking.

When the bears return home, the girl curls up tight with her old bear; 'from far beyond the hills' she can hear their heartbeats and her dreaming melds with theirs.

This magical journey into the world of bears is evoked in hypnotically lyrical verse and complemented by wonderfully atmospheric illustrations. We view the bears through the eyes of the girl and contrast her world with theirs, yet the perspective on bear life is a realistic one.
