Synopsis

The Narnia Chronicles, first published in 1950, have been and remain some of the most enduringly popular books ever published. The best known, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, has been translated into 29 languages! The year 2000 marks the 50th anniversary of first publication of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe introduced readers to the wonders and enchantment of Narnia when it was first published almost fifty years ago. Since then, the hearts and imaginations of millions of readers have been caputured by the story of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, who step through a magic wardrobe into Narnia, once the peaceful land of Talking Beasts, dwarfs, giants and fauns, but now frozen into eternal winter by the evil White Witch.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has enchanted readers for almost fifty years and now, for the first time, will delight younger children as a picture book. With Christian Birmingham’s illustrations providing an exquisite setting for the carefully abridged text, it is set to become a classic in its own right.

From the Back Cover

When Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are sent to stay with a kind professor who lives in the country, they can hardly imagine the extraordinary adventure that awaits them.

It all begins one rainy summer's day when the children explore the professor's rambling old house. When they come across a room with an old wardrobe in the corner, Lucy immediately opens the door and gets inside it. To her amazement, she suddenly finds herself standing in the clearing of a wood on a winter afternoon, with snowflakes falling through the air. Lucy has found Narnia, a magical land of fauns and centaurs, nymphs and talking animals – and the beautiful but evil White Witch, who has held the country in eternal winter for a hundred years.

'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' has enchanted readers for almost fifty years and now, for the first time, will delight younger children as a picture book. With Christian Birmingham's illustrations providing an exquisite setting for the carefully abridged text, it is set to become a classic in its own right.

'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' was shortlisted for the prestigious Kate Greenaway Award.

CHRISTIAN BIRMINGHAM graduated in illustration from Exeter College of Art and Design in 1991, and is one of the most talented artists of his generation. His first picture book, 'The Magical Bicycle' by Berlie Doherty, was shortlisted for the Kurt Maschler award.
