Daniel Fritcher Book, Fonda (Montgomery County, New York), Jan. 2, 1882. Accounts as poor-master of Montgomery County, N.Y., ~11 leaves of asylum transportation notes/costs in ink presumedly by Fritcher. ~37 leaves of monthly costs, in pencil, which appears to be by a different hand than earlier notes. ~half of notebook remains blank. Half-leather marbled binding measuring 7 x 6 , 8vo. Front board attached by cording only, fragile. Marbled paper covered boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Rear board was previously broken parallel to spine, but since repaired. Head and tail of spine lacking, binding exposed. Front hinge split at tail. Gilt running on leather spine moderately dulled. Front & rear gutters split, cording exposed. Front paste-down & end-page exhibit pencil marginalia + ownership signature (top edge of end-page). It seems the very first leaf of lined pages was torn from binding. Normal toning throughout text-block, with some instances of finger-soiling or age-staining. Pencil marginalia slightly smudged from wear. Binding intact, but board hinges are very fragile. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Assumed to be: Daniel Fritcher (1827 - 1897). DEATH: 1897 (aged 69 70) in Fonda, Montgomery County, New York, USA. BURIAL: Caughnawaga Cemetery, Fonda, Montgomery County, New York, USA. Husband of Eveline Oathout (1829-1887) & of Mary E Tillotson (1847-1933). Children: Francis S Fritcher (1850 1936), Charles H Fritcher (1861 1864), & May J. Fritcher (1877 1929). Fritcher wrote extensive notes on the transportation of insane asylum patients (both alive and dead) from 1882 to 1884. He kept the notes as a sort of account book, recording the fees & fares of each journey. He also includes the names of patients he is transporting (+ if they are a lunatic or a cured lunatic), or the date of the telegraph informing him of his next assignment. Entries are dated on the left, with costs on the right. Some particularly interesting entires include: "Jan. 9 [1882]. Called to Amsterdam [NY] by John Steward, Dispatch + fare to Amsterdam for case of insanity - .73", "March 18 [1882], went to Utica Asylum with John fares from Fonda, Lunatic Farell fare - 1.62. returned same day with Anna M. Flowers to Amsterdam, a cured Lunatic. Fare - 2.28." "Aug. 21 [1882]. Went to Utica Asylum with Elizabeth Waufle from canajoharie [NY], her fair - 1.26." "Feb. 1 & 8 [1883]. Went to Albany Orphan asylum with Hattie Kernel & Sarah Baird." "March 26 [1883]. Went to Utica Asylum and took George Belding and Edward Millar to Binghamton. Belding & Millar's fair from Utica to Binghamton - 5.70." "Oct. 22. [1883] received telegraph from Binghamton asylum informing me of Wm. Philips death. paid for telegraphing back - .36. Oct. 24. [1883] received his remains at Fonda by express charges from Binghamton to Fonda - 10.70." Both men and women are about equally represented in asylum patients. Quite an interesting set of manuscript notes. The first 11 leaves (about 22 pages) are asylum transportation notes. The remainder seems be a regular expenses account book. A rare find!
